A bathroom sink is one of the most often used accessories in a home, office or work environment. These sinks can be made from any number of cast and composite materials such as Porcelain, ceramic or Corian as well as metals such as copper or stainless steel. In addition bathroom sinks are available in several basic styles that accommodate almost any installation depending on the configuration and size of the particular bathroom.

In smaller bathrooms where size may not permit the convenience of a vanity cabinet the sinks are wall mounted and the supply lines and drain exposed beneath the basin. This is a typical installation for an informal work environment such as a shop or public restroom where handicapped access is required. Wall mount sinks must be either cast iron with a porcelain finish or stainless steel by requirement. This is to ensure against breakage and possibly bodily harm to an individual.

In small powder rooms and shared bathrooms within a home or certain businesses that have ample space the bathroom sinks are often set in a vanity cabinet and the lines and drain concealed behind cabinet doors. These are referred to as vanity sinks and there are two basic types of these as well as two basic options for the sink faucet fixtures or valve set.

A top-set sink is set on the finished vanity cabinet counter top. The vanity top may be laminate or ceramic tile and the sink features a rim that supports and suspends the sink over the sub-top opening. This rim is sealed and made water tight following the installation of the top set sink. Top-set sinks are available in many materials including copper and glazed ceramic. Certain styles of these sinks are integral and provide openings for the valve set. Other styles require mounting the faucets in the cabinet top.

The most common style of vanity sink is the under-counter sink. These sinks are also available in numerous styles and similar materials as are the top-set sinks. The under-counter sink has a wide flange and is mounted using clips that attach the flange to the under side of the vanity top. These sinks can be selected with pre-cut openings for faucets or a solid flange and the faucets mounted on the cabinet top.

Most any selection regarding the type and style of a bathroom sink will depend on the available space as well as personal preference or design requirements.
